Publications Manager – American Conservatory Theater – San Francisco, CA

American Conservatory Theater, one of the country’s leading regional theaters and actor training institutions, seeks Publications Manager to serve as the editor-in-chief of all dramaturgical publications at A.C.T, overseeing the creation, production, and distribution of the organization’s primary materials for educating local and national audiences about the company’s artistic mission and institutional goals through its commitment to producing high-quality dramaturgical publications designed to educate its literate and sophisticated audiences. The Publications department serves as a bridge between the work by the dramaturg and the audience, producing literary materials that support the enjoyment and understanding of the plays and productions produced by A.C.T.’s mainstage season, Conservatory programs and its Education / Outreach wing. It also supports the creation, editing, and proofing of publically consumed materials created through A.C.T.’s Marketing and Development departments. Additionally, the Publications department will be heavily involved in the planning, creation, and execution of materials associated with A.C.T.’s upcoming 50th anniversary season (2016-17).

Primary arbiter of editorial standards and guardian of the voice and style of all A.C.T. print publications
Editor, researcher, and developer of publically consumed dramaturgical and historical publications including, but not limited to, A.C.T.’s mainstage program, Words on Plays study guides, ArtReach Study Guides, and a variety of other research, web-based, and print projects
Provide copy, as well as editing and proofing support for major print and or web-based projects stemming from A.C.T.’s various departments including Marketing, Development, Education, and its Conservatory
Supervisor of Publications Associate and seasonal Fellow
Overseer of editorial standards for company-wide projects
Serve as main liaison with Encore Publications, who produce programs for mainstage productions.
Manage Publications budget
Coordinate / collaborate with A.C.T.’s in-house graphic and web design teams
Research and negotiate use of externally created content as relating to A.C.T. publications

In addition to strong writing and editing skills, the successful candidate will have a thorough knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style, and at least six years of journalism/publishing experience, including writing, editing, and proofreading, familiarity with publication tools and graphic design software, experience in dramaturgy (research and writing), and a familiarity with theater criticism and copy editing for marketing & development purposes. B.A. in English, journalism, or creative writing is encouraged; an emphasis in theater or related field highly desirable. This position requires frequent contact with staff members across multiple departments and at all levels of the organization, as well as with outside individuals, artists, publishers, vendors, and others. Must be able to manage several discrete tasks simultaneously; attention to detail a must, as is the ability to work within strict deadlines.
