Research Coordinator – International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children – Alexandria, VA

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Koons Family Institute on International Law & Policy is the research arm of the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC). This position is responsible for supporting, developing, implementing, and evaluating ICMEC research initiatives, and coordinating ICMEC’s intern program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support the Director of The Koons Family Institute by developing, coordinating, organizing, and implementing research initiatives and other projects
Research and write on topics related to missing children, child abduction, child sexual abuse, and child sexual exploitation, including collecting, organizing and sharing relevant data and statistics
Review laws and policies from around the world with a particular emphasis on identifying and addressing gaps and loopholes that hinder effective investigation and/or prosecution of crimes committed against children
Review and edit reports, papers and other materials produced in-house by interns and others
Manage the ICMEC internship program, including: recruiting, interviewing, selecting, and overseeing interns; attending career/internship/externship fairs; expanding the reach of the internship program; liaising with organizations and agencies to arrange tours and other intern events; and maintaining accurate intern records
Provide general administrative support, including answering the telephone, handling the mail, ordering office supplies, and other tasks as requested
Assist with providing periodic project/program reports to the Board of Directors, President & CEO and other staff as requested
Assist with the coordination of presentations, correspondence/mailings and materials as requested
Assist with the preparation and coordination of tours and activities for visitors as requested
Represent ICMEC at external conferences, events and forums as appropriate
Promote and exhibit loyalty to ICMEC’s mission
Promote a professional image
Communicate with co-workers, management and others in a courteous and professional manner
Respond promptly when returning telephone calls and replying to correspondence
Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree required; concentration in International Relations, Criminal Justice, Political Science, Communications, or related field preferred
Advanced degree in Law (e.g., Juris Doctorate) or a related field, such as human rights, preferred
One (1) year research experience in academic institution, non-profit or other setting required
Overseas experience and experience working with international entities preferred
Familiarity with child protection issues preferred
Project management experience desired
Administrative support experience helpful

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Strong research, writing and editing skills/experience required
Excellent oral and written communication skills required
Ability to speak a foreign language preferred
Ability to conduct statistical analysis helpful
Superior interpersonal, time management, organizational, planning, and problem-solving skills
Ability to prioritize, successfully complete multiple tasks with attention to detail, and meet deadlines
Demonstrated word processing, spreadsheet and databased software proficiency
Adaptability, flexibility and ability to work as part of a team or in an individual capacity
Ability to handle and maintain the integrity and confidentiality of sensitive material and information
