Senior Manager of Community Engagement – Oakland – Exhale

Exhale is an award-winning, national organization whose mission is to create a social climate where each person’s unique experience with abortion is respected, supported and free from stigma. Through direct services, leadership development and communications, Exhale’s pro-voice movement is transforming public dialogue about abortion. Exhale’s program strategies include: Direct Services, Storytelling, and Pro-Voice Thought Leadership. Exhale has a small professional staff and a volunteer base of 40. This position will manage Exhale’s relationships with our various communities and partners, including: Exhale’s community of volunteer counselors, our local and national clinic partners, as well as our online and social media communities. The Senior Manager of Community Engagement will be an integral part of the build-out and evolution of the organization’s program growth. This person will be passionate about creating a more pro-voice culture and will have a demonstrated history of working ethically on complicated, layered issues that require nuance and empathy. The Senior Manager of Community Engagement will be an experienced program professional and will report directly to Exhale’s Director of National Programs.

Position
The Senior Manager of Community Engagement will be responsible for working with the Director of National Programs, as part of the program team, to operate and expand Exhale’s program offerings, nationwide. The right candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a high EQ, and the ability to turn networking opportunities into tangible outcomes. We are seeking a seasoned professional with a sophisticated approach to cultivating relationships. This position will represent Exhale on a local and regional level and will manage a volunteer base of 40. The Senior Manager of Community Engagement will initially develop deep knowledge of Exhale’s direct service programming, as well as Exhale’s website and social media platforms, including their operations and strategies. We anticipate the possibility of doubling our volunteer network, growing our reach through social media, and expanding the network of abortion providers with which we currently partner. We are seeking a professional with 5-10 years of relevant experience.

Responsibilities
Relationship Management:
Manage relationships with Exhale’s volunteer counselors and community of stakeholders
Outreach to existing and prospective partners, including recruitment of new counselors, stewardship of relationships with abortion providers, and identification of local and national collaborative partners
Develop a deep knowledge of Exhale’s stakeholders and supporters and identify strategies to engage them in ways that are meaningful to them and will further Exhale’s mission

Planning and Grants:
Support the Director of National Programs on grant seeking and relationship management with foundations and program officers
Contribute to content of grant proposals and reports
Ability to create budgets and finance reports
Oversee metrics collection and analysis for programs
Support other Exhale program development including Storytelling and Pro-Voice Thought Leadership

Operations:
Talkline
Managing day-to-day operations, budget, and expenses
Coordinating and managing counselor training program
Managing relationships with counselors and contractors
Managing relationships with community organizations
Developing and implementing a strategic growth plan for the talkline’s evolution, including the expansion of the counselor training to a national, virtual learning model as well as creating efficiencies for scheduling, etc.
Website and Social Media
Providing oversight and direction of Exhale’s online presence and technology, including the website, blog, email list, and social media channels, working closely with marketing consultant(s)
Developing strategic and implementation plan, including budget, for website upgrade and redesign
Qualifications

The Senior Manager of Community Engagement will be thoroughly committed to Exhale’s strategy and mission and will have the following qualifications:

Relationship management and cultivation experience: A key responsibility of this position will be to cultivate and steward relationships with Exhale’s volunteers. The ideal candidate will have experience working with volunteers, or lay leaders, as well as contractors, consultants, and vendors and will have excellent listening skills for optimizing these relationships.

Exceptional communication skills: As a voice and advocate for Exhale, the Senior Manager of Community Engagement will have strong written and verbal communication skills. S/he will be a persuasive, credible, and polished communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills. This individual must work collaboratively with internal as well as external partners and other organizations, providing exposure for program impact in a variety of professional journals and other media outlets. Ideally, this person will have served as an effective spokesperson.

Program management and design experience: The candidate for this position will have experience both developing and implementing programs, including strategic design, creating and measuring benchmarks, and managing operations and finances. The ideal candidate will have a track record of effectively leading performance-based and outcome-based programs.
