Purpose of the Position
The Speech/ Language Pathologist is a qualified professional person who provides speech and language pathology services to patients in the home, trains, directs, supervises, evaluates other caretakers participating in the Speech Language Therapy plan as prescribed by the attending physician.
Essential Functions:
Evaluate patient’s speech and language abilities, both defects and assets, and performs periodic re-evaluations as required to measure and monitor the patient’s response to therapy, provide periodic communications to payers or other case managers as required.
Use written and oral tests, as well as special instruments, to diagnose the nature and extent of impairment and to record and analyze speech, language, and swallowing irregularities.
Develop an individualized plan of care tailored to each patient’s needs. Plan and provide rehabilitative services for speech and language disorders according to medical practitioner’s orders.
Select augmentative or alternative communication methods, including automated devices and sign language, and teach their use to individuals with little or no speech capability.
Teach those with little or no speech capability how to make sounds, improve their voices, or increase their language skills to communicate more effectively.
Help patients who have suffered loss of speech develop, or recover, reliable communication skills so patients can fulfill their educational, vocational and social roles.
Provide speech and language pathology services to patients in the home. Develops home exercise programs and other self-managed training for patients and caretakers to maximize the potential for progress toward treatment goals.
Prepares written correspondence, memoranda, reports, generate forms and other documents by means of word processing. Routes prepared documents to addressees as appropriate. Assists department with photocopying as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Operate, maintain, and disinfect the equipment needed for an endoscopic examination
Apply topical anesthetic when clinically appropriate and permitted by the licensing regulations of individual states.
Insert and manipulate the endoscope in a manner that causes minimal discomfort and prevents unpleasant complications.
Manipulate the endoscope within the hypo pharynx to obtain the desired view.
Direct the patient through appropriate tasks and maneuvers as required for a complete and comprehensive examination.
Interpret and document findings in a written report.
Formulate treatment and management strategies based on test results
Requirements:
Licensed and currently registered to practice Speech Language Pathology under Title VIII, Article 154 of New York State Education Law.
A graduate of a speech and language pathology program accredited by the American Speech and Hearing Association with a master’s degree.
One full year of supervised work experience as a Speech Language Pathologist
An equivalent combination of related education and experience
