Youth Education Manager – The Mountaineers

DESCRIPTION
The Youth Education Manager is responsible for oversight of all Mountaineers Youth Education Programs in Seattle, Everett and Kitsap. Programs include Outreach Programs, Mountaineers Adventure Club, Explorers, Pioneers, Gateway programs and Summer Camp. Mountaineers Youth programs are heavily volunteer-led, and a priority for the incumbent is to ensure a minimum of 50% of all instruction is delivered by volunteers. The Youth Education Manager will set vision, goals and strategies for volunteer-led youth programming that are in line with The Mountaineers mission and strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities
Volunteer Development & Cultivation
· Design and implement a robust volunteer engagement program that utilizes the strengths and interests of Mountaineers members
· Ensure volunteers have the tools and training they need to effectively implement youth programs
· Ensure volunteers have an outstanding experience with our youth programs
· Provide ongoing training and development for volunteer instructors and leaders
· Provide support for volunteer-led initiatives to run youth and family programs in their committees
· Measure volunteer satisfaction
· Track volunteer engagement and retention in youth programs
· Track youth who become volunteers as they get older
· Develop and implement a volunteer recognition program for youth volunteers

Youth Program Management
· Ensure youth programs are managed effectively, including:
Staff leadership
Volunteer leadership and instruction
Communications with participants and parents
Communications with partnering agencies
Administration (filing of waivers, health forms, etc)
Marketing and website
Participation tracking
Safety procedures are in place and in effect
· Ensure programming is within the models and guidelines for Mountaineers Youth Programs
· Manage communications with volunteers and donors including
Ensure broad awareness of youth programming successes and needs
Maintain strong relationships with key volunteers, high-level volunteers, key donors
Manage ongoing volunteer cultivation in all youth programs
· Oversee staff and volunteer training
· Market programs through local media, Mountaineers website, and other outlets
· Work with Assistant Program Manager for Outreach and other education staff to manage gear inventory

Program Development
· Responsible for implementing the vision, direction and growth of youth programs within The Mountaineers strategic plan and priorities
· Work with the Education Director to set and manage measurable goals for growth and retention of existing programs
· Manage introduction of new programming according to strategic plan and youth education strategy
· Work with youth staff, Education Director and the other Education Managers to develop and maintain efficiency models for youth programs
· Ensure new and existing youth programming is within standard Mountaineers procedures
· Work with youth staff, Education Director and the other Education Managers to develop and manage strategy for ushering youth through tiered programming, from low-commitment to high intensity programs, and transitioning into adult volunteers.
· Work with Development Team to curate stories and images for fundraising stories, and to identify and submit grant applications where appropriate

Program Support
· Participate in 10-25% of each program to provide support and oversight
Includes occasional weekend trips with the youth clubs
· Provide program coverage where needed
· Provide hands-on support for new programming
· Provide support for volunteer-led youth programs (currently in Kitsap and in the Seattle Sea Kayak Committee)

Budget Management
· Develop annual budget for each youth program within Education Department guidelines
· Manage programs to budgeted net
· Ensure programs are priced strategically based on program cost, market value, and service demographic analysis
· Assist Development Teamwith youth-oriented fundraising efforts

Staff and Volunteer Development
· Train and supervise a full-time staff team of 3 and provide mid-year and annual performance evaluations
· Ensure staff and volunteers maintain appropriate training and certifications
· Provide meaningful volunteer recognition and development as appropriate

Preferred Qualifications
· 4-year degree from an accredited college/university
· Two years’ experience working with skilled volunteers, preferably in a year-round capacity
· Three years’ Outdoor Education experience with multiple program types, including summer camp
· Two years’ experience training and supervising others
· Knowledge of basic climbing skills and a variety of outdoor pursuits. Experience managing toprope climbing sites or willingness to learn is critical
· Knowledge of, desire to work with, and experience working with a variety of populations, including preschool through high-school, youth of varied abilities, diverse ethnicities and diverse socio-economic backgrounds
· Proven interpersonal and customer service skills
· Proven attention to detail and vigilance with risk management
· Proven excellence in written communication
· Proven success managing and developing programs
· Proven success working with adult volunteers
· Strong organizational skills
· Understanding of the organizational structure and programs of The Mountaineers
· Current CPR & First Aid Certification, Lifeguard Certification and Leave No Trace Certification preferred
· Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. While performing the duties of this Job, the employee will be required stand for extended periods of time while leading youth, and must be able to hike on uneven and hilly terrain continuously for up to ten miles. The employee is occasionally required to bend, squat, run or climb as part of duties leading youth.
