Status: Full-time, Fixed-term with possibility for extension
Hours: Standard work week, but must be flexible to work non-standard hours as needed
Travel: less than 20% — some at-sea domestic and international travel as needed to support Nautilus expeditions and events
The Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) is seeking candidates for the position of Science Communication Specialist & Media Producer for the 2015 Nautilus Expedition field season (April – October) with the possibility for extension into a year-round position. S/he will provide video and multimedia support for our education, outreach, and communications teams.

The Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) is a 501(c)3 founded in 2008 by Dr. Robert Ballard. Our mission is the exploration of the ocean, seeking out new discoveries in the fields of geology, biology, maritime history, archaeology, and chemistry while pushing the boundaries of STEM education and technological innovation. The Nautilus Exploration Program centers on scientific ocean exploration launched from aboard the 64-meter Exploration Vessel Nautilus, supported by state-of-the-art robotic and telepresence technologies on board and ashore that are used to advance ocean exploration and STEM education worldwide. Primary Responsibilities
Identify, pursue, and write stories that support OET’s educational, outreach, and scientific goals
Work closely with OET Production to develop scripts for educational and scientific videos
Coordinate the production of content fornautiluslive.org andoceanexplorationtrust.orgincluding blog posts, photo galleries/captions, and videos
Provide daily support for OET’s social media presence including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube & Instagram
Assist with outreach and communication efforts, press releases, and editing
Assist with the production of supportive materials for OET’s educational products
Assist with communication and outreach efforts at sea aboard E/V Nautilus as needed
Other duties as needed
Required Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, education, marine science or relevant field
2+ years of experience in scientific and/or educational outreach, storytelling, communications
Experience writing content for various media
Excellent writing and communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills
Ability to interpret complex scientific and engineering concepts and distill them into compelling stories for geared towards multiple audiences
Comfort with and skills in public presentation development and delivery
Quick learner, willing to roll up sleeves to learn new skills and technologies
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a multidisciplinary team
Self-starter and positive team-player attitude
Willingness to travel and participate in at-sea expeditions aboard OET’s Exploration Vessel Nautilus
Eligible to work in the USA; current passport without travel restrictions
Must pass criminal background check
Preferred Qualifications & Experience
MS degree in marine science, journalism, education, or relevant field
Experience in video production including pre-production, shooting, and post-production
Experience in image editing (e.g., utilizing Photoshop and other Adobe products)
Previous experience utilizing Google Docs and Drive for collaboration purposes
