Introduction. The Community Ambassador Liaison position is a key element of efforts to implement activities and services of the Behavioral Health Advisory GroupAmbassador Team (BHAGAT) project, an initiative established in 2014 that is coordinated by One East Palo Alto (OEPA) Neighborhood Improvement Initiative. BHAGAT is a school-based mental health crisis response project implemented by a partnership comprising the East Palo Alto Behavioral Health Advisory Group (EPABHAG) convened by OEPA, Ravenswood City School District (RCSD), East Palo Alto Police Department (EPAPD) and San Mateo County Office of Education (SMCOE). Its overall aim is to provide culturally competent crisis responses to RCSD middle school students experiencing trauma as a result of violent crime in East Palo Alto (EPA) so as to meet their needs as victims and enhance their recovery.
Responsibilities. Reporting to OEPA’s Executive Director and the BHAGAT Ambassador Team Coordinator (ATC), the CAL will implement responsibilities via a part-time work schedule (.25 FTE) through which the following duties will be performed:
Collaborate with ATC in implementing short-term and long-term crisis interventions and support, Positive Behavioral Intervention System data collection and other key project services.
Maintain a presence/regular office hours at assigned RCSD school campus (Ronald McNair Academy) where interventions will be provided
Conduct culturally appropriate youth and family crisis interventions as assigned.
Document intervention and follow up
Assist with assessment-related duties
Participate in monthly meetings with BHAGAT project staff and volunteers.
Work with EPAPD officers, RCSD, SMCOE staff and community organizations to provide information about the BHAGAT project.
Represent BHAGAT at EPABHAG meetings as well as various health/disaster response related meetings, activities and events throughout the EPA community and in San Mateo County.
Work with volunteers and participating agencies in the delivery of program services such as crisis intervention, emergency assistance, Youth Mental Health First Aid education/empowerment, resources and referrals and victim advocacy.
Assist with other duties as assigned.
Qualifications. The successful candidate for this position will provide evidence of the following qualifications:
High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred in psychology or sociology or equivalent experience;
Bilingual communication proficiencies (English- Tongan and/or English-Samoan) preferred;
Ability to relate well and deliver quality programming to youth from a variety of socioeconomic, ethnic/racial and language backgrounds as well as their family members;
Familiarity with East Palo Alto and experience working with its multiethnic, multilingual population;
Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing as well as to follow written and verbal instructions;
Proficiency in use of computers and other forms of technology;
Flexibility and responsiveness in performing assigned responsibilities, with good customer service orientation;
Ability to understand, implement and follow policies, procedures, regulations and laws
Track record in demonstrating strong interpersonal communication and related skills
The BHAGAT Community Ambassador Liaison is a part-time (10hrs/week), non-exempt position that will start immediately. Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include vacation, 24 hours/year of sick leave and holidays.
