Institutional Development Intern – Gay Men’s Health Crisis – New York, NY

Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) was founded in 1981 in response to an epidemic that was ravaging communities in New York City. This grassroots crisis response became the world’s first AIDS organization, and GMHC is now an internationally-recognized organization that services individuals living with and affected by HIV/AIDS and advocates for public health reforms.

This internship is an opportunity to learn how a high-performing Development Department generates new program ideas and cultivates foundation, corporate, and government funders. The Institutional Development Intern will assist the department in raising funds from private foundations, corporations, and federal, state, and local government agencies.

Internship activities will include the following:

Conduct in-depth research and prospecting activities to identify new potential funders to support the agency’s general operations and specific programs and services.
Assist with preparing letters, grant proposals, and sponsorship requests for corporate and foundation funders. Contribute to the brainstorming, writing, and editing process for these written documents.
Help to grow GMHC’s employer matching gift and cause-related marketing programs, by contributing to brainstorming and the cultivation of relationships with potential corporate partners with brands and products that align with GMHC’s brand and mission.
Support the development of government grant proposals by conducting topical research and contributing to proposal narratives and supporting documentation (charts, graphics, letters of reference, logic models, timelines), to ensure submission of highest-caliber products.
Attend and help coordinate donor cultivation activities, including phone calls, meetings, and site visits to spread enthusiasm for GMHC!
