Read to a Child is a national nonprofit organization that creates better opportunities for children and strengthens society as a whole by inspiring adults to read aloud to children. Research proves that the simple act of reading aloud to a child regularly significantly impacts his or her literacy skills and, thus, his or her likelihood for success.
Lunchtime Reading Program
Read to a Child’s flagship lunchtime reading program matches business professionals with elementary school students in underserved schools for weekly one-on-one reading sessions. Currently, Read to a Child runs programs for children in Boston, Detroit, Connecticut, Los Angeles, and Miami with its national headquarters in Boston–providing management and program oversight and support. Position Description
The Development/Program Assistant will be an integral part of Read to a Child’s Los Angeles Team. The Development/Program Assistant will assist the Executive Director and Program Manager in all aspects of planning, execution and follow up of the annual Los Angeles for Literacy fundraising event with over 120 guests and a fundraising goal of over $30,000. The assistant will also be involved in aspects of volunteer recruitment, management including handling sensitive and confidential information. Regular communication with school site coordinators, providing newsletter communications and reviewing/compiling program evaluations are essential functions of the role. Specific responsibilities include:
Availability for day and evening of Thursday, July 16th, 2015 required
Research potential in-kind donors for silent and live auctions and solicit by phone and email
Assist with all administrative tasks related to event including but not limited to: ticket sales, guest lists, catering orders, invitations, thank you letters and overall event timeline
Assist with event volunteer recruitment and training
Manage print schedule for all invites, save the dates, event program and signage
Participate in staff trainings and meetings
Create outreach documents/emails, offer informational sessions and create materials to recruit volunteers from partner companies and organizations
Assist in maintaining the Salesforce volunteer database recording changes and updates as they happen throughout the year.
Support Program Manager in maintaining communication with 6 school site coordinators
Research and recommend children’s literature titles, literacy tips
Compile, review and analyze evaluation results
Participate in staff trainings and meetings
Support programming through assisting in day to day office work

Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and comfort working with databases
