The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press is a 45-year-old nonprofit association located in Washington, DC that provides pro bono legal support to journalists and news organizations. RCFP’s litigation and advocacy work in recent years has grown to include collaborations with technology companies, law school clinics, and startup news sites, and its board is comprised of some of the nation’s leading journalists and editors.
RCFP is now hiring a Director of Development and Outreach to work with its board and executive director to assist the organization in its fundraising and brand-building efforts. The successful candidate will have a background in development, nonprofit management, and media and communications, and will be committed to advancing RCFP’s mission of protecting free expression and First Amendment freedoms.
Responsibilities
• Researching potential foundation, corporate, and individual donors, working on fundraising solicitations and grant applications, and maintaining a donor database.
• Planning special events such as RCFP’s annual fundraising gala in New York and conferences on First Amendment and news media issues, including Sunshine Week.
• Developing relationships with journalists, media lawyers, and current and potential funders with attention to developing RCFP’s brand.
• Managing RCFP’s social media profiles and other outreach strategies.
• Producing RCFP publications, including annual report, and assisting in the design of new website features.
• Partnering with RCFP’s board and staff to publicize RCFP’s litigation and amicus brief practices and other advocacy projects.
• Coordinating regular updates to journalists, lawyers, donors and other constituencies and liaising with RCFP’s board and executive committee.
Experience
Three to five years of work experience demonstrating progressively larger responsibilities in the areas of development, nonprofit management, marketing, and communications. Candidates should be prepared to show that they can run large projects, plan communications, write compelling content, use a range of word processing and website software, bring success to fundraising efforts, and work enthusiastically with colleagues, donors, journalists, and other partners.
Education
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required.
Compensation
Salary will be commensurate with experience. Full health benefits including dental, as well as long-term disability and life insurance, will be provided. A 401(k) pension plan is available.
