Employment Specialist – Vietnamese Youth Development Center – San Francisco, CA

AGENCY DESCRIPTION:

Based in San Francisco’s Tenderloin District, the Vietnamese Youth Development Center (VYDC) is a multi-service agency offering services in employment and leadership training, education and advocacy as well as individual and family counseling for immigrant and low-income youth and their families. The Center’s programs help to divert youth by providing constructive activities that impact their world increase their individual and cultural pride as well as build community spirit. Founded over 37 years ago, VYDC serves over 500 young people each year.

POSITION SUMMARY:

VYDC’s Employment Department serves low-income young adults 17-24 and Asian Pacific Islander adults of immigrant origin who are 18 years old and over. The Employment Specialist provides targeted employment support through job readiness workshops and intensive job retention services to at-risk and high-risk adults in the Tenderloin, South of Market and neighborhoods throughout San Francisco. The Employment Specialist will prepare clients for employment, secure employment opportunities for program participants and develop business and employment contacts to promote the educational attainment and career development of the participants. This position reports to the Employment Program Manager.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Employment:

Plan, organize, and facilitate weekly program orientations and job readiness workshops
Conduct client assessment to determine participant’s current education level and career plan.
Assist in client recruitment
Assist participants with pre-employment activities such as resume writing, interviewing skills, job search activities (both online and in person), job coaching, presentation, job retention, career and education planning.
Maintain contact with employer and client following placement to ensure job stability.
Perform necessary post-placement and post-exit follow-up to ensure participant job retention longevity.

Job Development:

Create and update promotional materials to be distributed to potential employers in order to highlight the benefits of employing VYDC young adult clients.
Maintain up-to-date client file content for accuracy and completeness and prepare reports to Supervisor and funders.
Assist with outreach activities in the neighborhood, tabling at fairs and community events as assigned by Supervisor
As needed, attend grantor meeting, program trainings and professional development trainings.
Participate and attend agency and program meetings and agency-wide events.
And other duties as assign by Direct Supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum of two-year-college or bachelor degree in related field.
Familiarity with employment or workforce development area, especially with at-risk and high-risk populations.
Previous experience in community programs preferred.
Excellent knowledge of education and employment resources for immigrant adults in San Francisco.
Bi/multi-lingual in a Southeast Asian language, a plus
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both one-on-one and in groups.
Self-starting, self-motivated and able to work within a team and on multiple tasks.
Strong knowledge of services and programs for children, youth and families in San Francisco.
Fingerprinting and TB background check required.
