Interpreting / Linguistics Intern – U S Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) – Arlington, VA

U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI), is a nongovernmental, not-for-profit national organization dedicated to addressing the needs and rights of refugees and immigrants.

The Business Development Team creates and develops relationships with business partners, with the goal of using those relationships to support our refugee and immigrant clientele and achieve our organizational mission. Currently, the team’s main focus is launching an interpreting social enterprise business, which will directly benefit refugee and immigrant clients by providing sustainable and flexible employment, while promoting interactions with community services.

USCRI is dedicated to ensuring a mutually beneficial relationship with its interns. USCRI offers interns a student-friendly environment and flexible schedule. Interns are provided opportunities to learn more about the organization and the non-profit sector and enhance their professional development through weekly Brown Bag presentations and mission-related film screenings.

Join the Business Development team as an Interpreting and Linguistics Intern.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Actively participate in the development of a national interpreting network.
Thinking outside of the box about the interpreting industry and how best to interrupt it for our client’s advantage.
Writing, proofreading and editing program materials, including marketing materials.
Responding to customer or field office requests or questions.
Assisting various departments, field offices and partner agencies in interpreting program rollout.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Current or recently graduated undergraduate or graduate student studying communications, linguistics, TESOL, non-profit management or a related field.
Excellent writing, proofreading and editing skills.
Interest in disrupting current interpretation methods to benefit speakers of other languages.
Experience coordinating presentations and webinars and confidence in public speaking.
Experience in customer service a plus.
Experience in developing a website, working with APIs, or software development a plus.
Fluency in a foreign language a plus.

Internships require a minimum of 20 hours per week (interns may not work more than 8 hours per day) and a 10-week commitment. The internship is located at Crystal City-Arlington, VA, 15 minutes from DC.

COMPENSATION:

● Part-time (20-30 hrs. per week): up to $160 stipend per month

● Full-time (30-40): $240 stipend per month

● Local travel expenses to and from the office are also reimbursed, up to a maximum of $20 per day.
