POSITION OVERVIEW
This is a long term substitute position covering for our Adjustment Counselor who will be on maternity leave. We’re seeking a qualified counselor (LCSW, LICSW, LMHC, etc) to fill the position from January 4, 2016 through April 29, 2016. (Start and end dates may be flexible; we aim for the long term substitute counselor to overlap with our Adjustment Counselor in order to ensure the smoothest transition possible.)
The primary focuses of the Adjustment Counselor are on counseling services and overall student well-being. Much of the Adjustment Counselor’s caseload is with students who receive counseling services through their Individualized Education Program (IEP). The Adjustment Counselor also consults with parents and service providers (outside therapists, agencies, DCF) to ensure students are receiving the social/emotional services they need. The Adjustment Counselor is a critical member of the Student Support Squad, a group of school leaders and support specialists who collaborate around social/emotional programming, structures, and interventions for all students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
─ Provide individual and group services, per Special Education requirements and demonstrated need.
─ Support counseling needs of general population.
─ Provide in classroom supports.
─ Communicate regularly with families of students receiving services.
─ Consult with outside providers, including completing risk assessments and referrals (ie. Department of Children and Families, juvenile court, mental health providers).
─ Communicate regularly with the school’s contracted School Psychologist.
─ Participate in weekly grade-level meetings with teachers to address students of concern (behavioral, academic).
─ Participate on the Student Support Squad, led by the school’s Director of Student Culture.
─ As needed, participate in 3-year IEP evaluation meetings and annual review process.
─ Reports to the Director of Student Culture and works collaboratively with all school leaders.
─ Support implementation of Restorative Practices at McAuliffe.
QUALIFICATIONS
─ Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling or related field required. Licensure preferred: LCSW, LICSW, LMHC or beyond.
─ Demonstrated ability to engage, direct, teach, and have fun with middle school-age students
─ Experience leading small group counseling sessions
─ Experience and knowledge with social thinking philosophy
─ Skilled at setting limits, processing/chaining events, and guiding students to take responsibility for their actions.
─ Trained and experienced in applying crisis prevention and de-escalation techniques
─ Agreement with the goals and philosophy of the school’s mission, vision, and goals
─ Demonstrated commitment to personal and professional growth: reflective, focused on ongoing learning and improvement, evidence of perseverance through challenging situations.
─ Knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations, including mandated reporting
─ Enjoys working in a high energy and creative environment!
─ Demonstrated ability to establish strong relationships with students, faculty, and parents.
─ Strong verbal and written communication skills.
─ Skilled at prioritizing, organizing, and following through.
