New Dawn is a transfer high school located in Brooklyn, New York. As a transfer school we serve some of the most at-risk students in NYC those who are over-aged and under-credited. We invite people to apply who are motivated by a challenge and are capable of navigating some of the most challenging learning and instructional issues in the City. The philosophy at New Dawn is based on the belief that all students have a right to an education, even if it takes numerous attempts. Students need support in all areas of their lives and staff is involved in all aspects, working with the whole student.

Mission Statement: New Dawn Charter High School will provide over-aged and under-credited students 15-21 years of age, including those who are English Language Learners and those with special needs, the opportunity to return to school and obtain a high school diploma through a rigorous NYSED standards-based education program. Within the framework of the education program, three programs will be offered: 1) Interventions for those with fewer than 11 credits, and for those with 11 or more credits: 2) Internships in the community and 3) College enrollment.

We are currently looking for a College Guidance Counselor. The person filling this role will be charged in helping support our school mission in addition to supporting students to graduate high school and go to and through college.

Key Responsibilities:

College Counseling and Support

Manage a caseload of approximately 60-80 senior standing students and monitor their progress towards high school completion and college readiness.

Provide support to students and families through the college application process with an emphasis on CUNY, SUNY, and The Common Application.

Demonstrate specific knowledge to support students through additional college application processes including EOP, HEOP, SEEK, and College Discovery.

Provide support to students and families through the financial aid process including FAFSA, TAP, and scholarship applications.

Assist students in SAT and/or ACT sign-up and registration.

Increase student and family awareness of college by planning and executing programming such as college tours, college fairs, admission sessions, and relevant workshops.

Develop and maintain key contacts at various colleges/universities and college focused community based organizations.

Support students during their enrollment of college credit courses through our partnership with the CUNY College Now program.

Teach a yearlong advisory course five days per week focusing on college awareness and long term career planning.

Track and analyze data regarding student and alumni college related outcomes

Student Support

Manage a school wide caseload supporting students with developing their Individualized Learning Plan (ILP)

Through the Individualized Learning Plan, support all students through assessing their high school requirements, future courses, in addition to their short-term and long-term goals.

Collaborate with school mentors with supporting their mentees to achieve successful outcomes of ILP goals.

Collaborate and work closely with our Internship/Career department in regards to supporting student meet job related goals.

Alumni Support

Stay in constant communication with New Dawn Alumni via phone calls, e-mail, and campus visits to ensure they have the necessary support to become successful in college.

Plan and execute alumni homecoming events to have students return to mentor current New Dawn students.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree Required

Experience and understanding working with the Naviance system is preferred but not required

A serious commitment and belief in our school mission

Experience with and understanding of at-risk and underserved student populations

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Exceptional time management skills with the ability to multi-task on several projects

• We are a full year school running on the NYC DOE calendar from September through June and then July through mid-August;

• We work from 9 to 5 with an hour at the end of the day for professional development and addressing school-wide issues;

• Teachers and staff participate in Instructional Rounds with other schools involved in the PICCS project, this is done by visiting schools, conducting classroom observations and developing problems of practice that impact us all;

• Opportunities to becomes trained and certified in the Danielson Classroom Observation Rubric; and

• Access to professional developers from TERC Using Data, Danielson, Metamorphis, A.L.L., among others.
